Simulated Panorama

Gund Hall, Cambridge Massachusetts, USA. Harvard Graduate School of Design Pavilion Competition, 1st Place, 2012-2013
Simulated Panorama combines digital projections, mirrored surfaces and an inhabitable heterotopic landscape, to situate public encounters within a spectrum of mediation and simulation. On the busiest corner of Gund Hall, is a billboard and immersive environment, bringing both content produced within the GSD to a wider public, and outside content to the school.
After the competition stage, our team produced drawings and worked with a licensed architect, contractor, and ARUP to fabricate and construct the first GSD pavilion outside of Gund Hall.
Midway through the construction process, an engineering revelation caused the project to be put on hold. Review of the original Gund Hall engineering documents, showed that the columns would not be up to code by today’s standards, and could not withstand the additional lateral load (equivalent to the weight of two cars) of the wind on the screen.
